US to resume beef imports from Japan after two-year ban

Industry meets government to discuss foot and mouth disease risk

(ABC) The Sheepmeat Council says an Australian outbreak of foot and mouth disease is inevitable and it wants producers to be vigilant. Government and livestock industry representatives yesterday met in Canberra to discuss Australia’s readiness to deal with FMD. The Sheepmeat Council says it’s encouraging that those groups all see eye-to-eye on what needs to be done.

Increase in Genomic Replikin Counts Predicted Recent Avian Flu (H5N1) Outbreak in Cambodia

(The Sacramento Bee) A marked increase in the H5N1 pB1 Lethality Gene Replikin Count (number of Replikins per 100 amino acids) in Cambodia in 2009 provided a warning for the outbreaks of the Avian Flu (H5N1) with human deaths in that country. Eight deaths were reported in 2011 and three thus far in 2012.
